Early 2009 season

Ellie Well, that was a good season!
The start was a bit exciting, when we had to drive the Zodiacs in 85 knots of wind to get our gear ashore (in the dark). But we settled in quickly and tagged 12 southern elephant seals during our stay. We also resighted some animals we tagged in previous deployments, but we didn't managed to recapture them. Why? We saw them in their mud wallow, but couldn't find them a week later on the beach to catch them!

G5RV This time I just used the G5RV sloping from the south to the north as you can see in the picture. That worked quite well to the Americas and Africa/Europe. This setup is the best to avoid using guylines and getting problems with reindeer and furseals. But I have to think about and extra antenna for the asia / pacific area for the next time. The amazing thing is, that the G5RV was taken down twice by the wind! Well, I told you, it can be gusty down here... I had to reinforce the centre and all connectors.

Shack at night I also used a new soundcard interface, kindly sponsored by SM5AQD. It worked very well and the setup up was very easy. To be honest, I fell in love with RTTY! This is clear when you look up the dxcluster and look at how many times I was spotted in RTTY. It also proved to be living room suitable! The radio station is in the living room and using SSB annoyes my room mates, CW is clicking away, but RTTY is a silent mode!
